Sensationally Red
Red Bakelite is a sensational thing indeed and here we have a biggie. My friend Doreen sold me this button—and why am I so crazy about it? Let me count the ways. 1. It's Bakelite. 2. It's a large button. 3. It's red. 4. It's beautifully carved at the corners and around the border with an indented patch (like a basin) for the buttonholes. All of this equals a great design! 5. There is some swirling and if you look closely you should be able to see a few marbleized areas with fine, yellow streaks. Because of this "yellow swirling," some collectors of Bakelite call this color Creamed Tomato. This button goes back to the 1930's. A grand specimen of vintage plastic.
