This beautiful pair of buttons turned up a few years ago at an antique bazaar in Cape Coral, Florida. At first glance, I assumed they were earrings, but they are indeed buttons with metal shanks on the backs. Both colors—black & orange—tested positive for Bakelite. The black sections are carved with an angular pattern that gives these buttons a dash of art deco flair. The orange balls nestled into the black squares remind me of gumballs. Look closely and you can see that these jolly orbs are blessed with yellowish swirls. How I ended up with two of these buttons can only be chalked up to pure luck. Circa 1928.
