As if yesterday's post wasn't enough, here are three more ball buttons—a delicious set of sunlit berries. Plastic meets plastic with these buttons as they are made of butterscotch Bakelite with precision-cut celluloid inlaid at the tops. Similar to the button I posted on Monday, the celluloid is beautifully pearlized. These buttons likely go back to the 1940's when Bakelite was phased out in favor of the cheaper plastics.

Here's Day Two of my week-long exploration of combo-plastic buttons and this one's a curious zinger indeed. The main bulk of this spherical weirdo is apple juice Bakelite, but check out that mysterious top layer. That's marbled celluloid in brown and cream. Isn't it luscious and bizarre? In my view it resembles an elaborate frosting—bound for a French pastry. As an added touch, the AJ Bakelite is enhanced with two rows of carved spots, forming a truly exotic orb like nothing I've ever seen. Size-wise, this ball button measures less than an inch across. To get a strong and detailed image, I zoomed in with my camera to capture the strange features on display here. Circa 1940.

Here begins my week of Bakelite buttons combined with other plastics in their original constructions going back to the 1930's. To kick things off, this is a cherry red button in tested Bakelite with two pearlized stripes. The stripes are inlaid celluloid and display cleanly and with an ornate shine. Please note that all of the buttons I'm posting this week are purchases I made from my friend Doreen, who has a special knack for finding Bakelite buttons with non-Bakelite enhancements. That's exactly what I'll be posting all this week. Stay tuned for some absolutely stunning buttons.
