Figure Buttons: Black Bears
Now that it's officially springtime, I'm marching out these post-hibernation black bears (though they might actually be raccoons). Anyhow, these are known by collectors as "figure buttons" and unlike the carved type of Bakelite, these buttons are factory-pressed. I've been told that this variation of button was primarily used on children's clothing and ladies blouses as a short-lived trend in the early 1930's. At some point in the future of this blog, I'll be showcasing a week-long slew of figure-shaped buttons since they came in formations galore—from monkeys to swans—and I've got quite a circus.
